5 communication trends to watch in 2025

· Blog

In communication, as in many other fields, recent years (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) have been strongly shaped by rapid technological advances – and, in parallel, by a growing need to humanize interactions.

That movement continues in 2025, with these five major trends shaping the future of communications.

1. Striking a balance between AI and public trust

The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in content creation has changed how we work. Generating content with AI is simple and fast… but the line between fact and misleading information can be blurry.

More and more, hesitation is becoming a natural reflex for users who question the validity of the content they come across.

According to a recent study by Accenture¹, more than half of respondents doubt the authenticity of online content. This erosion of trust negatively affects both online shopping and interactions with brands. In fact, one in three (33%) people reported being victims of deepfake scams or attacks in the past year.

The same report highlights the public’s mixed reaction: while people see technological progress as beneficial in everyday life, they also question its broader impact. This trend reveals a desire to rebalance the role of technology in their daily lives.

A Qualtrics report² from October 2024 reinforces this shift, noting that enthusiasm for AI is giving way to growing skepticism. Only 26% of consumers say they trust companies to use AI responsibly.

In 2025, one of the top priorities for brands will be to rebuild trust by establishing ethical principles and clear policies around AI-generated content.

2. Personalized content backed by audience data

Storytelling, personalization and data-driven content adaptation help brands better respond to their audience’s preferences. For businesses, this translates into stronger customer loyalty and increased sales.

Consumers want to interact with promotional content that is tailored to them. According to a Deloitte³ study, approximately 75% of consumers are more likely to buy from brands that offer personalized experiences – and they spend an average of 37% more with those brands.

To achieve this, companies must understand the priorities of their target audience. Data collection and analysis allow them to decode user behaviours, respond to their needs and create content that resonates.

AI-powered tools that automate data analysis and help predict user preferences and behaviours enable businesses to better align content with search intent and sharpen their content strategy.

That said, concerns about data privacy are closely tied to this trend.

While users want personalized experiences, they are also wary of how their personal information is used. They are increasingly interested in how companies collect and manage data.

To meet expectations, brands must focus on transparent and ethical practices. With third-party cookies being phased out, companies now rely more heavily on other types of personal information — usually that provided voluntarily — to deliver personalized experiences while respecting user privacy.

3. Niche content

The global influencer marketing industry has more than tripled in value since 2019, and working with content creators remains central to many communication strategies.

In recent years, mainstream internet celebrities have been overshadowed by micro-influencers, who typically have between 5,000 and 100,000 followers. Because their content is more specialized, they are often referred to as niche influencers, while their audiences are known as niche audiences or niche communities.

These content creators play a key role in communication campaigns by driving strong engagement within their communities. In some cases, these communities act as full ecosystems, targeting very specific market segments.

Although smaller in size, niche audiences are much more invested. Often seen as experts or enthusiasts in their field, niche influencers build unique, authentic relationships with their followers.

Brands should leverage the appeal of niche content to reach highly engaged audiences. In 2025, this type of content will become even more prevalent in enhancing customer experience and boosting conversions. The focus is on creating relevant, authentic content that aligns with user interests – rather than relying solely on traditional advertising.

4. Human-centred interactions

Alongside the proximity effect of niche influencers, the need for human interaction continues to be one of the dominant trends in communication.

Audiences are more selective and skeptical than ever and, as a result, are drawn to brands that offer genuine connections and more human-centred approaches.

For companies using AI to interact with customers, a recent Qualtrics report shows that more than half (51%) of consumers are concerned about not being able to speak with a real person – up two points from the previous year.

AI certainly has its place, but it cannot fully replace human involvement in storytelling, content creation and customer experience. Human interaction is key for generating empathy and showing vulnerability – two emotions that contribute to a positive brand image.

In 2025, campaigns will lean into human-centred strategies, incorporating empathy, authenticity, transparency and emotional proximity into every interaction.

5. Social commerce

Social commerce continues to evolve toward a smoother customer experience and a simplified purchase journey. It allows users to discover, interact with, and purchase products directly on platforms they already use.

According to a Statista study from 2024, nearly a quarter (23%) of global consumers said Facebook offered the best social commerce experience. Instagram came in second at 19%, followed by TikTok at 7%.

These platforms are now crucial for businesses looking to grow sales through online engagement. According to HubSpot, the future of e-commerce lies in social commerce. That is why integrating shopping functions directly into social media is becoming a priority.

In that same report, most surveyed merchants reported steady year-over-year growth in sales through social platforms. They also believe these platforms allow for better audience targeting and provide stronger return on investment.

In 2025, communications will continue to be shaped by both technological innovation and the enduring need for human connection. By embracing the challenges and opportunities presented by these trends, businesses can adapt their strategies and remain relevant to their audiences.
